I am a Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, Immunobiology, Pathology and a member of the University of Arizona Cancer Center, Steele Children’s Research Center and the Bio5 Institute. I combine my expertise in basic and translational with clinical research as the Director of the Hematopoietic Cellular Therapy and Transplant Program (adult and pediatric) and Division Chief of Tucson-Phoenix Integrated Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. I have >35 years of research experience in the field of tumor and transplant immunology. I have served on numerous NIH grant study sections and other national and international granting organizations and journal editorial boards and have published over 160 peer reviewed articles and book chapters in the areas of cancer immunology-immunotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. I have received several grants (RO1s and R21) as PI from the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute, the Department of Defense, the Medical Research Council of Canada, the Canadian and the American Cancer Societies, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I have a particular interest in haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation, graft versus leukemia, and chemo-immunotherapy. Current work in my laboratory is focused on use of pre- and post-transplant immune modulation by selective agents, cellular therapies, and cancer vaccination.
